According to the Ottawa Police Service, in 2018 there were 2,724 reported collisions involving pedestrians in Ottawa. Out of those collisions, five resulted in fatalities and the remaining 2,719 caused serious injuries and property damage.
Of the fatalities, four involved pedestrians being struck by a motor vehicle while one involved a pedestrian being struck by a bicycle.
Overall, pedestrian collisions accounted for 8% of all collisions reported in Ottawa during 2018 and occurred most commonly in intersections (54%), followed by mid-block locations (25%).
About two thirds of these collisions occurred on dry roads while one third occurred on wet roads. Most pedestrian collisions happened at night (47%) followed by day (43%) and dusk/dawn (10%).
The majority of time for collision was between 7 pm to 10 pm when darkness was falling across the city.
In terms of contributing factors to these collisions, both drivers and pedestrians were deemed responsible in equal measure with 51% occurring due to a negligent driver error and 49% due to pedestrian error.
Of all driver-related causes of pedestrian collisions, failing to yield right-of-way was the biggest contributor at 29%. Failure to obey traffic signals was the second largest contributor at 17%. Pedestrian related errors included jaywalking (32%) and crossing midblock (27%).
Overall, the statistics show that pedestrian car accidents are a major issue for Ottawa citizens as not only do they cause fatalities but also serious injuries as well as property damage.
Therefore it is important for motorists both pedestrians and drivers alike to be aware of their own safety when travelling around on public roads.
Child pedestrians are at an increased risk of being hit by vehicles due to the prevalence of motor vehicles on our roads. With more cars on the roads, there is an increased chance that a child might be struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing a street, or playing in a parking lot.
Children are often unaware of their surroundings and may not pay attention to oncoming traffic, making them especially vulnerable to harm from passing vehicles.
Additionally, children’s smaller size makes them difficult for drivers to see from inside their cars. Therefore, it is important for parents and caretakers to take extra precautions and ensure that children are being watched closely when they are out walking near roads or playing in parking lots.
The WalkSafe Program is an innovative program that has been implemented across Ontario to help keep pedestrians safe on the roads. This program provides education and training for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians in order to create an environment that keeps everyone safe.
In addition to teaching people how to stay safe while walking or biking, this program also aims to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging motorists to slow down in residential areas.
Drivers are given information on how they can be more aware of their surroundings while driving and how they can help make roads safer by following the rules of the road.
When a pedestrian is injured in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to understand how to handle the situation legally and financially. First off, it is essential that experienced medical attention be sought immediately after the accident so that any injuries can be properly treated. Additionally, anyone who has been involved in such an accident should seek legal counsel from an experienced lawyer right away.
Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of pedestrian accidents – something that is particularly concerning given its preventability. Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol put countless lives in danger and should be held accountable for their actions.
If you or someone you know has been injured due to another driver’s negligence – whether they were impaired at the time or not – it is important to seek help from an experienced lawyer right away so that your rights are protected under the law.
A qualified attorney will be able to assist you with filing insurance claims and pursuing potential lawsuits against negligent drivers in order to cover any medical bills, property damage, lost wages, or other expenses associated with your serious injury, pedestrian or car accident case.
If you have been struck by a vehicle as a pedestrian, the first step is seeking medical attention. Even if you don't think you are seriously injured, it's important to be evaluated for any possible internal or long-term injuries.
It's also important that you get checked out right away in case there is evidence of the accident that can only be captured immediately after the incident.
Once your health is taken care of, it's important to gather evidence at the scene which may include collecting contact information from witnesses and taking photos of any property damage or physical injuries. You should also call the police to report the incident and collect a copy of their report.
Next, contact your insurance company and/or an attorney to explain what happened and discuss filing a claim or lawsuit against the driver who struck you. Be sure to follow up with your medical provider and keep all records related to your treatment.
